At the International Consumer Electronics Show this year, WildCharge Inc. brought home the Best of Innovations Award with its WildCharger, a desk pad that charges multiple electronic devices. Just place the device — your BlackBerry, your MP3 player, etc. — on the pad, and it begins charging up, just as if it was plugged in.
“This is a further validation of our technology and products and recognition from the industry that the wire-free power revolution is here, with WildCharge its leader” WildCharge President Izhar Matzkevich, PhD, said. “Charging and powering a mobile device is now as simple as placing it on a table.” Matzkevich notes that “our technology’s universal applicability, simplicity, versatility and low cost have sparked great interest from electronic, automobile, furniture and other manufacturing industries. Leading companies in these industries are currently preparing to embed WildCharge technology in their products to be offered to consumers worldwide in the near future.”
We like Matzkevich’s enthusiasm. However, a better quote comes from Mitch Randall, the company’s founder and CTO: “…we made a step towards eliminating the need for consumers to regularly lug around multiple bulky chargers, adapters, and cords for every battery-powered mobile device they carry.”
From our vantage point, it appears that the WildCharger is far bulkier than any of our BlackBerry chargers. Plus, how many portable electronic devices does one carry around? You have your phone, your mp3 player…maybe a portable GPS, but those are being integrated into phones. Hell, mp3 players are, too.
Love the idea, and love how it works in theory. But, as the great philosopher Homer Simpson notes, “Communism works, in theory.” In reality, it appears the WildCharger adds more bulk to your luggage. But if you lug around three or four devices, you might find some use from this.
