If you believe the media, you think that the BlackBerry is in some heated rivalry with the iPhone. A few months ago, many experts considered that bunk. RIM hadn’t shown a decline in sales since the inception of the iPhone. Plus, the BlackBerry focuses on the business market, while the iPhone is widely considered a consumer phone. Then things changed a bit. Apple announced that they would be offering Enterprise services for the iPhone. And now we’re seeing RIM make a consumer-related move: Offering a device that hooks your BlackBerry up to your stereo.
“This is huge,” said Carmi Levy, senior vice-president of strategic consulting for AR Communications Inc. “This really is the first tangible evidence that has been bubbling under for some time, but RIM has been really quiet about bringing that to fruition.”
Over a third of BlackBerry subscribers can be considered consumer users rather than business users, so they’re looking to tap that market. Plus, even if you’re a business user, wouldn’t you still think its cool to play your music files on your stereo?
The device will be about the size of “a couple crackers,” and will utilize Bluetooth technology to deliver the music files. Of course, devices of this nature must be approved by the FCC, so we might be waiting a little bit on this one.
No release date and no price have been revealed yet. So all we have at this point is a whole ton of excitement.
