OtterBox Storm Defender Case for BlackBerry

Posted by Cooper on June 23, 2009

It is no secret that we here at BBGeeks love the product put out by the OtterBox team. We have taken a look at quite a few of the OtterBox cases in the past and profiled some of them for you right here on the site.

The only device we do not have in house to test on is the BlackBerry Storm (and Pearl flip) so once in a while we catch ourselves neglecting the device and not highlighting the solutions that are handy for Storm owners.

Today we rectify that situation by bringing you the first of a great product line from OtterBox for the BlackBerry Storm.

Be sure to read all the way to the end for a surprise for one lucky Storm owner.

Introducing the OtterBox Defender Series case for your BlackBerry Storm

otterbox-storm-frontThe Defender Series from OtterBox is a lightweight (2.86oz) solution to preventing damage from dings and scratching, not to mention the occasional dropping of your BlackBerry Storm.

Despite the light weight of the protective case, the Defender actually provides 3 layers of protection.

  1. The first of the three is is a clear membrane that sits over top of the Storm’s SurePress touch screen. This membrane is specifically designed to provide maximum protection while not interfering with the functionality of the touch screen itself.
  2. The second layer of protection you get with the OtterBox Defender Series for the Storm is a high impact Polycarbonate shell. This is similar to the shell of other Defender Series models and provides a high level of security for much of the external surface of your device.
  3. The third and final layer of protection offered by the OtterBox Storm case is a silicone skin that is meant to absorb any kind of shock impact the device is exposed to when it is dropped, or knocked against something while in a pocket or bag.

That is quite a bit of protection for your Storm. If you are prone to damaging your phones, whether due to recklessness or just heavy wear and tear, the OtterBox Defender Series for the Storm is just what you need. Simply take the five minutes to wrap it up tightly in the above described layered protection and you will no longer have to worry that this bump might be the last.

Of course, despite all the protection offered, the OtterBox Storm case is not water proof and it will not protect your device in the event that you leave it in a puddle of beer water or take it over Niagara falls on an inpromptu barrel ride.

Putting together your OtterBox Storm Defender Case

As described above, the Storm Defender case is made up of three pieces. Wrapping your Storm in the protective casing is a simple process.

  1. Give your Storm a good cleaning, making sure to wipe off any grease, dust or film on your screen before inserting into the OtterBox case.
  2. Separate the individual pieces of the Storm casing from OtterBox and set your Storm into the Back portion of the casing.
  3. Clip the front portion of the Storm casing into place so that your Storm is now wrapped in a hard shell.
  4. Wrap the entire hard shell with the shock absorbing silicone skin.

There you go. Your Storm is now housed in one of the strongest cases available for purchase. Rest assured that you are now protected from the majority of bumps and scrapes your device could potentially be exposed to on a daily basis.

Conclusion

Despite not having a Storm to test this case out on, I can make a solid suggestion to BlackBerry Storm owners to at least take a look. The case itself is very light weight and does not add too much bulk to the Storm design. The protection offered by OtterBox is always stellar and with the Defender case design you can still access all of your ports and the touch screen with no interference at all.

If you could wrap your Storm in 3 layers of protection and ensure that a careless incident involving a bike messenger, a runaway Monster Truck and a flock of Seagulls couldn’t even put a scratch on your baby . . . why wouldn’t you?

I need the case because I am headed to Vegas for my birthday in a month, and need to protect it from long list of activities planned.

The storm is the greatest smartphone ever invented. Now I can stay in touch with everyone via phone, email, facebook, twitter check the weather, my bank account, take awesome pick and even listen to music….I’ll never be without my Storm!!!

#11955 Joseph on June 23rd, 2009 at 11:21 am

My storm really needs a case, I have dropped it a few times and it needs help

#11956 Sturta on June 23rd, 2009 at 11:25 am

My Storm is the first thing I check in the morning, and the last thing at night. It gets bumped around a lot when it is in my pocket, so I would love to keep it safe with an OtterBox!

#11957 acerlee on June 23rd, 2009 at 11:28 am

work in medical field am a lil ruff and just need to protect my life and my bb is just that my life

#11958 DavidB on June 23rd, 2009 at 11:29 am

I love the Storm’s huge screen compared to other Blackberry smartphones I have had.
An OtterBox would let me browse on that huge screen in far more environments than I can now!

I got my BlackBerry Storm about two months ago as my first cell phone (and finally made the leap into the 90s!). I’d fought against getting a phone for years but there was a deal too hot to pass up.

I don’t go anywhere without my phone now. My friends laugh that it’s always with me (little do they know that it vibrates under my pillow at night as I sleep with it, too).

However, this little addiction keeps me in contact with them via the many apps, such as yahoo messenger, AIM and facebook, as well as email the browser for other internet sites. I can respond to them whether for an impromptu lunch or a ride across town to pick up their car.

In short, I love my BlackBerry Storm because it helps me keep in contact with everyone I want to hear from. I even talk to my mother more often since I’ve had it.

I’ve had a silicone cover since I bought my bb and I have some complaints about it–it picks up lint from my pocket, it makes it difficult to slide my bb in & out of my pocket, it’s already torn in one corner. Though I enjoy how it is slightly sticky and can cling to things at an angle (and I don’t need the level app to know that it’s heavily inclined), I’m ready for something more impact resistant since I’ve already dropped it once (luckily it bounced off the top of my shoe first) and, being how klutzy I am, I know I’ll drop it again. The belt clip will keep my bb out of my pocket, securely attached to my hip and protect it from the ubiquitous lint.

I love my Storm for the touchscreen, world phone capabilities and music over bluetooth.
I need an Otterbox being the 24 on call guy. That means even when I am on vacation I need to have the phone with me at all times. pool side and beach side currently fill me with dread. I think the Otterbox might solve that issue for me.

#11961 Dave on June 23rd, 2009 at 11:56 am

I love my Storm since it’s the first phone I’ve had that I can actually see the screen without having to squint! I’ve only had it for two weeks but I wouldn’t trade it for any other phone at this point – apps or not!

If I want to level a bookcase, I don’t need a $600 phone and an app, I need a $10 level. ;)

I just wish I could find a decent Texas Hold’em app like I had on my old LG 8100.

#11962 REWolf on June 23rd, 2009 at 11:57 am

Oh, man, I really need one of these!

#11964 Ankit on June 23rd, 2009 at 12:16 pm

I love how I am able to Multi-Task using the storm, be it writing email, surfing, updating calendar and of course talking on the phone at the same time. The ability to take it with me to the gym while listening to Pandora is priceless. The Otterbox case will definitely help me out in my day-to-day use with the wear-n-tear I go through.

#11965 David B on June 23rd, 2009 at 12:17 pm

I love my storm. Since i bought it it has improved my organizational skills, while making me work less because i am always fiddling with it. I work in a wood shop and would love to use the otterbox to protect my storm.

#11966 KarynC on June 23rd, 2009 at 12:31 pm

I love my Storm for its browsing capabilities. When I’m out shopping, I check different web sites to compare prices on items I want. And the OtterBox would let me look so much cooler when I’m doing such geeky activities. Plus it would keep my phone from getting scratched up in my purse. I really hope you’ll pick me, since I never win anything and you could change my luck and make my day! Thanks BB Geeks! (from a LOYAL Twitter follower!)

#11967 john bowman on June 23rd, 2009 at 12:32 pm

i love the storm very much…. i use it everyday for work…everything from twitter (ubertwitter) to facebook even my storm saber… i love all of the apps…. the otterbox case would be very useful for me….

Hook me up with one please. I have a blackberry storm and I’m a iphone hater.

#11972 George on June 23rd, 2009 at 1:54 pm

This case seems amazing! Of course…getting a free one would be way better. Thanks for this contest, and review!

#11973 Daniel on June 23rd, 2009 at 1:58 pm

I love my blackberry storm it’s probably the best piece of technology I have ever owned. The BB Curve got me in the Storm made me a BB user for life!

#11981 Rick on June 23rd, 2009 at 5:02 pm

I am getting my Storm from work next week! My First Blackberry! FINALLY! I would love a case like this to keep it clean from DAY ONE!

Thanks!

#11982 mickW on June 23rd, 2009 at 6:24 pm

I love my Storm, and this is about the best protection u can get for it.

#11983 nick b on June 23rd, 2009 at 6:35 pm

i got my storm when it first came out and i love it. i fell in love with blackberry with the 8830 but this just blows it away. the software updates that have been put out have really turned around the storm into a great phone. as a business traveler i have plenty of tools that make my days walking in the airports much easier.

#11984 @ngel on June 23rd, 2009 at 6:46 pm

There can’t be a storm out of a OuterBox case, and mine feels a bit nude without one!!!

#11989 W Meaders on June 24th, 2009 at 2:50 am

I love my storm this is by far the best phone I’ve ever owned. Everything I’ve always wanted to do from the convenience of my phone, I can now do. I especially love staying connected via Twitter, Facebook, and being able to check my Gmail. I’m in the Navy and the harsh environment of the Submarine is not kind to my storm. This case would be awesome to have.

#11991 Dofang on June 24th, 2009 at 5:58 am

My Storm is my extra brain. When I travel, my biological brain is frazzled, fried, and overstressed. My Storm is calm, and reminds me at the airport which gate to walk toward, and tells me how much time I have. I can check my email, make calls, and download things I need to read. Then, when the plane takes off and we reach altitude, I can relax and listen to a podcast or some good music, and read my fave blogs. And all on a pristine, very large screen. Nice!

#12006 Sheila on June 24th, 2009 at 2:43 pm

I’ve had my Storm for a couple months now. My husband finally convinced me to upgrade phones since he got a BB through work. With having kids, it’s great to be able to use the Storm to keep track of their activities on the calendar, take pictures w/o having to tote around an extra camera and have games to keep them busy in a restaurant or doctors office. The OtterBox case would be a great comfort when I let them play games (I’m always worried they’ll drop it!), and will let me leave my purse at home since I don’t have a clip for mine now. My huge purse doubles as my BB case!

#12036 cisnky on June 25th, 2009 at 12:10 pm

Love the Storm, not a fan of the latest update. I need this case before I damage my phone.

#12037 JustinRampage on June 25th, 2009 at 12:12 pm

The Storm is so much fun to mess with. It might not run right 100% of the time, but there are plenty of ways to experiments with new software and make it do what you want. I recently broke my Incipio case by it falling out of my pocket. I could really use an OtterBox Defender Series case to replace it.

#12038 Jean C. Rivera on June 25th, 2009 at 12:15 pm

Pick me. I bought the Incipio feather case but everytime. I had to remove the battery it would crack. After 3 exchange I ask for my money back.

#12039 kyle on June 25th, 2009 at 12:17 pm

I got my storm only a few days ago june the 21st (my birthday)It’s still perfect no scratches ect and i would love to keep it that way as im always outdoors so i would like to keep it clean
I love my blackberry because I can get all my email keep in touch with my friends and family and keep updated with twitter berry from anywhere when im in the car when im camping or when im at school

#12040 Stephanie on June 25th, 2009 at 12:18 pm

I waited in line for my Storm the day it was released, and I have loved it ever since! I use my Storm for all areas of my life! I track my daughter’s softball stats on it and use it for all of my email both work and personal as well as my calendar and my Twitter and Facebook updates, my Storm is my life! The OtterBox case would be great for keeping it safe on the softball field, and for all of the many hours of use that my Storm goes through each and every day in and out of my purse, pocket, and equipment bag! My last case broke so right now my Storm is naked!

#12041 JN on June 25th, 2009 at 12:18 pm

I love the Storm because of SureType. Without it, I would not go for a touch screen device. And I need the OtterBox because if anything were to happen to my Storm, I wouldn’t be able to afford a new one.

#12042 JN on June 25th, 2009 at 12:20 pm

Sorry, I meant SurePress.

#12043 john on June 25th, 2009 at 12:24 pm

Quite simply my storm ROCKS. And every rocky storm requires a little love and protection.

#12044 Mark on June 25th, 2009 at 12:27 pm

I love my storm. I don’t think I can function normally without it.

#12045 Shawn on June 25th, 2009 at 12:28 pm

The last few months of having the storm has made me more connected and accessible to all who may need me. I have been able to better serve clients, and keep in better touch with friends. This phone (computer with phone capabilities) has probably saved at least 1 business relationship already.

One of the greatest fears i have had since day 1 was keeping my storm safe. I have tried the basic plastic case, the silicon skin, and the armored belt holster, but i have not felt than any adequately protected the new extension of me. This new OtterBox looks to be the answer i have been looking for.

#12046 Djricorich on June 25th, 2009 at 12:31 pm

I love my storm so much. I do so many things with it on a daily basis and on top of that I don’t have a pc at work so my blackberry is the only way I get all my info. To not have it protected with such an awesome case would be ridiculous. I need this case

#12047 Dave on June 25th, 2009 at 12:37 pm

I love my storm and would love to try out the protection that the Otterbox would give!!

#12049 Aaron on June 25th, 2009 at 12:44 pm

I’ve had the storm since feb and I love it. Only downfall is with my job I have to work outside in the elements from time to time, would love to have a case like this to protect it.

#12050 Luke on June 25th, 2009 at 12:52 pm

The Storm, why do we love thee? The large screen for reading tweets, amazing clicky keyboard for sending tweets, and the uber wonderful BB push email so my Mom will send emails straight to my phone rather than call me all day in my cubical. Oh, and that calendar thing so I’ll show up closer to on time. Now why would I need a an Otterbox Defender? So I can go out and send my boss emails without worrying about what’s going to happen when I throw the phone in anger over his emails.

#12051 John Bowersox on June 25th, 2009 at 12:53 pm

Cool case, but looks a bit bulky. Either way I would not turn it down.

#12054 Derek on June 25th, 2009 at 1:23 pm

I love my BlackBerry Storm. Use it for work and personal use from email to weather to Twitter and many other things. My Storm has proven to be invaluable and definitely a great purchase. I could use the OtterBox case for my Storm because I am in and out of tight places all day at work and fortunately have not scratched or damaged it yet and would prefer not to. The OtterBox would help prevent me from doing that.

Thanks for your consideration.

#12055 DJ on June 25th, 2009 at 1:27 pm

Nice Case….lets check er out…

#12088 Jono Martin on June 26th, 2009 at 2:34 pm

I have had my Storm for less than 24 hours now and I haven’t been able to put it down. I went to sleep late last night and woke up early this morning. I’m tired, but in love with this device. And this is my first BlackBerry. I must say that I am a BB user for life now!

I have loaded a ton of music in it; I’ve installed a few Google apps; I have several browser bookmarks filed; I’ve loaded all of my Google contacts in it; and I’ve set ring tones. I’ve also signed up for BB user groups and forums, and–as can be evidenced here–I have searched for BB blogs to increase my knowledge of this awesome phone/PDA/lifeline.

One thing I really need now, though, is the protection offered by that cool surprise giveaway.

Thanks for considering me for the prize!
