There are tons and tons of cases for your BlackBerry out there, and we find it hard to believe that some people don’t take advantage. Even if it’s out of your pocket and attached to a belt clip, it still stands to incur some serious damage over time. You invested a lot of money in the device, and therefore should be protecting it in any way possible. Problem is, a lot of the BlackBerry cases just don’t pass muster. Otter Products thinks they have a solution: the OtterBox 1933. It fits a BlackBerry 8800, 8820, and 8830 — and it seems durable enough to make your BlackBerry last much longer.

The device kind of acts like the iPod case we have. First is the “thermal formed protective clear membrane,” which protects the screen and keys. It’s a thin layer, and you can easily access the buttons that it covers. We’ve seen plenty of BlackBerry screen protectors, and we think that it’s probably the part that needs most protecting. But a keypad guard is not common. That sets the OtterBox apart from peers.

The next is the “hi-impact polycarbonate shell.” In layman’s terms, a synthetic plastic-like material that keeps the exterior free of bumps and dents. We’ve also found that it really protects against damage incurred by dropping the phone (we drop our iPod, and it certainly would not be in tact without the case).

Finally, there’s a silicon layer on the outside, which absorbs the shock from a fall. Combined with the plastic shell, this does provide the best protection against dropping and denting.

The only problem we see is that it’s not water-resistant. But you can’t have everything, we suppose. We haven’t had a chance to test out this puppy, but after reading about it you can be sure we will. For clumsy folk — or even folks who just keep their BlackBerry in their pocket — this really is a revolutionary protection mechanism.
