Bodyguardz skin protects your BlackBerry

Posted by Joe on May 13, 2009

BBGeeks tote around their devices in different ways. On the subway I’ll see women fetch theirs from a handbag. Guys will store them in a coat or pants pocket. Still others, both male and female alike, will reach to their belt clips when checking for new emails (or to play a game, which is so common on the subway). The problem is that in many cases, the primary storage place leaves your BlackBerry susceptible to nicks and scratches. You can reach for a case to protect your device, but if you’re like me you find them bulky and unpleasant to carry. Thankfully, there’s a thin, transparent alternative for those who want the natural BlackBerry feel. It’s called Bodyguardz, and after the jump we’ll go over their product and its usefulness for your BlackBerry.

A thin, clear solution

The problem with other BlackBerry cases and skins is that they’re either bulky or unattractive. Honestly, I’m a big fan of the BlackBerry design. It’s nice-looking and functional, but many cases can interfere with both of those. Even the OtterBox case, which I enjoy very much, inhibits much of the form and function of the BlackBerry.

Bodyguardz separates itself because it is not only paper-thin, literally, but it is clear as well, meaning you don’t have to visually modify your BlackBerry at all to enjoy the protection it offers. This can be important to some. Even if it’s not, adding the Bodyguardz protector to at least the screen can save the BlackBerry where other cases fall short.

Installing Bodyguardz

Installing Bodyguardz is quite the process. It’s a trade-off, though. It’s a one-time thing which can leave your BlackBerry protected for its lifespan. So consider it an investment which can pay off in a less-dented, less-scratched device. While it won’t prevent against drops, it will keep your keys from scratching the screen.

Here’s a demo video of me installing Bodyguardz on my Curve:

The process is relatively simple. In the Bodyguardz kit you’ll find four sheets of the clear plastic material: two for the front and two for the back, just in case you mess up. There’s also a spray applicator and a plastic card that acts as a squeegee. The process starts by you wiping down your BlackBerry to remove dirt and dust.

As you remove the adhesive from the backing, spray it down with the adhesive. They also recommend you spray your hands with the adhesive, as to not dirty the plastic. That’s important, because you don’t want dirt and grime trapped between the skin and the device. It’s almost impossible to remove once the adhesive dries.

You then apply the skin to the appropriate spot on the BlackBerry. Lay it as flat as you can over the surface, and then squeegee out the excess liquid, holding the skin in place since it will tend to slide around. Then let it dry for 12 hours.

Impressions

Only two areas of my BlackBerry really concern me as it entails scratches and nicks: the battery cover and the screen. I only applied Bodyguardz to those areas, and I have to say I’m satisfied. The device still fits perfectly in my pocket, obviously, and I’ve noticed not only fewer nicks and dents, but also less gunk on the screen. You know, the kind that you normally wipe off with your pants leg. The screen is just as clear as before, and it’s nice to know that it won’t suffer any further scratches.

The only downside I can see is for those who aren’t sure handed. It takes precision to apply Bodyguardz, and messing up can cause a few issues. For instance, an air bubble on the screen is going to make the skin more trouble than it’s worth. Plus, who knows how difficult it will be to get off once the adhesive dries (and hell if I’m going to give it a shot). Still, I think the benefits outweigh the potential problems.

Get Bodyguardz

If you like what you see, you can get a Bodyguardz skin the BBGeeks Store. That link will bring you to the whole selection, which includes most BlackBerry models, including the Storm. If you do try it, let us know what you think in the comments.
