Can we be frank for a moment and admit a fault of ours? We’re simply horrible at explaining technical mumbo jumbo. For the most part, we understand it; at least at a base level. But when we try to explain highly technical things (for instance, pending patents), we sometimes confuse even ourselves. We can’t imagine what that does to you, the loyal reader. So we’re going to link out and hope you guys can follow someone who is much better at explaining these things.
What we can explain: Research In Motion has applied to patent a device that would reduce the amount of battery your BlackBerry drains while you use it. What it would do, in the simplest terms, is dim any portion of the screen that is not currently being used. This way, only some of the backlight is being used, as opposed to all of it.
We wonder: how did no one think of this before? Laptops have been around forever, and the No. 1 complaint is that they eat batteries like the cookie monster eats cookies. So no one had this idea for laptops, but they do for BlackBerries? Odd indeed, but as long as it’s getting done, we’re happy.
Of course, it remains to be seen exactly how much battery life this will save you. If it is anything significant, we expect this to be a widely implemented technology. Research In Motion stands to grow even stronger. These are all good things.
