We love the guys at Boy Genius Report. They’ve got some insider source or another, and are always giving us juicy tidbits before they’re announced by the companies — usually RIM and AT&T. Anyway, they have some specs on the rumored BlackBerry 9100. Lots of technical stuff, but that’s what’s available at this point.
The BlackBerry 9100 will sport a screen with the dimensions of 480 x 320 (or maybe that’s 320 x 480), 1GB of on-board memory, and an Intel XScale PXA270 processor at 624MHz, clocking in slightly faster than the 620MHz ARM 1173 processor found in the iPhone. The BlackBerry 9000 will sport the dual-threat of GPS and WiFi as well as introducing 3G support (multi-band HSDPA) to the GSM carrier family devices, answering the prayers of many of us. At this point in time, there’s no update to the camera, which remains at 2 megapixels, although we’re hearing there is the possibility of seeing a 3.2 megapixel camera at launch.
Verizon and Sprint customers won’t be too happy with this. But, it’s standard for BlackBerry to cater to the GSM crowd first.
The 480 x 320 resolution gives one pause, as it leaves in question the fate of the keyboard. Slider? Flip like the LG Voyager? Touch-screen like the iPhone? The latest is not likely, as one of the only complains we’ve been hearing about the iPhone regards the touch-screen keyboard.
It could drop early next year, according to Boy Genius. If that’s the case, expect official announcements from RIM coming within the next month or so.
