We have to admit that something does peeve us about the BlackBerry. It advertises instant messaging, but that’s really limited to BlackBerry Messenger. There’s nothing wrong with it, really, it’s just that when we hear “instant messaging” we tend to think MSN, Yahoo, or AIM. After all, most of our friends use it, so to have access from our BlackBerry would be pretty sweet. Alas, we’re left wanting in that area. But those crazy cats at Sprint are ready to deliver what we’ve been looking for.
Yes, they will be the first BlackBerry carrier to supply AOL Instant Messenger to their subscribers. This will be a Java-based application, so we remain skeptical about its overall functionality, but it’s still an excellent idea that will help Sprint boost its BlackBerry sales.
This feature will be available on the following CDMA units: 7130e, 8703e, and of course the 8830. It will also be available on the iDEN units 7520 and 7100i. This comes at no additional cost to the BlackBerry subscriber.
The only quibble we have right now is that it advertises “virtual real-time message exchange.” Okay. We don’t like the word “virtual” next to the phrase “real-time,” only because “virtual” is one of the most ambiguous terms ever. We’ll see if we can find some reviews of the service in the coming weeks.
Does anyone have a BlackBerry with Sprint service? We’re quite curious to know how well it operates on the whole. Because really this is a neat-o feature. We wonder how long it will be before the other carriers pick it up.

I just purchased a Blackberry, and use Nextel/Sprint as a carrier. I have had lots of trouble downloading the AIM software, but have found several alternatives while Sprint tells me “the AOL server is down, has been for about a week”. I didn’t like to hear that, and would prefer to use AIM itself. I will keep trying to download, but every time I try the request times out. It leaves something to be desired for sure, but all in all I am happy with the speed of the current client I’m using in the mean tim! :)
“We have to admit that something does peeve us about the BlackBerry. It advertises instant messaging, but that’s really limited to BlackBerry Messenger.” – blame your carrier because I downloaded, and installed, GTalk and Yahoo Messenger from RIM.
Apparently, there is a new version out for Sprint users who got their hands on the new pearl 2. I tried to download to my 8830 but it would not work.
i have the bb pearl via at&t and i have ramble, which i use for aim. but my dad has a bb from sprint. its pretty wicked, hes got the yahoo messanger on it. its awesome. until then, i didnt kno that you could have a messanger other than the bb one.
I have the latest version of the Sprint-Aol Messenger, and I have to say it is as good as it gets. Real time… very close to it. I have been a Sprint/Nextel subscriber for a very long time… and this is def one of the best advantages…. afterall we are the last to get the latest devices ;-(
I currently am using the curve with tmobile service and have all the aim, gtalk, windows live even icq! Its great..and not until yest. Did I dowload the new version of the y!
