BlackBerry News From The Wire for the Week of 11/16/2009

Posted by Joe on November 19, 2009

Purchasing a BlackBerry is a serious decision. Not only does the device cost up to $200, but you’re then committing to two years of service. We discussed the total BlackBerry cost a while ago. Voice plan, messaging plan, data plan — it all adds up over two years. Earlier this year we saw a prepaid carrier, MetroPCS, launch the BlackBerry Curve 8330. The service cost $50 per month for unlimited voice and messaging, plus BIS ($60 for BES), making it cheaper than most other BlackBerry service plans. It’s attractive because there is no commitment — not in the contractual sense, at least. The device cost over $400, and that kind of investment can keep you tied to the service. It appears T-Mobile is trying a similar gambit.

Making the font smaller on your BlackBerry Tour

Posted by Joe on November 16, 2009

What at one point appeared to be another frustrating BlackBerry weekend turned into a pleasant surprise. After upgrading the BlackBerry WordPress app, I rebooted my Curve, as required. The next time I checked it, it was frozen. I rebooted again, but soon found myself in the same situation as a few weeks ago, when my Curve died. This time I took it to the Verizon store, knowing that even if I fixed it again, I’d get the same problem again eventually. The rep was receptive to my plight, and offered to exchange my Curve for a Tour. I couldn’t say no. Immediately after booting up and activating, I noticed an issue with the font.

It’s a change of pace this week on the BBGeekcast. While we’re usually all over the latest devices, this time it’s about the software. BlackBerry News From the Wire for the Week of 11/9/2009

Posted by Joe on November 12, 2009

RIM held the second annual BlackBerry Developer Conference this week, and where there is a conference there is news. Considering the BlackBerry’s inferiority in the software department, the conference had the potential to be big. And, unsurprisingly, we got a few announcements that could eventually change the BlackBerry software for the better. Which is nothing but good news.

Keep up with your favorite publications with PressReader

Posted by Joe on November 12, 2009

In the digital age many of us have become accustomed to RSS readers. They’re simple, they’re convenient, and for the most part they deliver just the information without all the frills. But sometimes people want the frills. After all, it’s not so long ago that we went to the end of the driveway to pick up the newspaper every morning. To that end, there is Press Display, a service which allows you to view your favorite newspapers from around the world, right down to the formatting. You download the publication, meaning you can read it offline, a huge, huge plus for the traveling worker. Their latest development, as we learn from jkOnTheRun, is PressReader, an application which allows you to view those publications on your BlackBerry.

Videos on how to do stuff to your BlackBerry

Posted by Joe on November 11, 2009

In thinking of an idea for a how-to article for this week, I went to the BBGeeks YouTube page to see what we’ve already covered. I realized that we need more videos up there. Over the next few weeks and months, expect a lot more in the way of video content. It might be stuff you already know, but a little video tutorial never hurt anyone. So, because I was already on YouTube, I went through and picked out some pretty good BlackBerry how-to videos. Hopefully you find something worth your while herein.

Location-based social network Loopt adds new features

Posted by Joe on November 10, 2009

Last week, the people from Loopt, the location-based social network, offered to send me some embargoed information. I ignored the email. It’s nothing against them specifically — I’ve just found location-based social networks to be a bit creepy. But then, after reading the information on CrackBerry, I realized that I was being a bit selfish. Just because I don’t prefer something doesn’t mean that the BBGeeks out there feel the same. If you like to explore the social networking possibilities from your BlackBerry and have friends who do the same, Loopt is probably for you. They recently announced a few upgrades, which makes even a skeptic like me think that maybe the service is worth trying.

BlackBerry News From The Wire for the Week of 11/2/2009

Posted by Joe on November 5, 2009

I’ll admit, I was a bit distracted from the BlackBerry world this week by this. Still, there’s plenty of BlackBerry stuff to discuss. For instance, Verizon announced the Curve 8530, to be known as the Curve2. It’ll hit shelves and the Web on November 20 for $99.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate. I’ve been telling people that if you’re not a big video user, this is a great deal. It features a 528 MHz processor, Wi-Fi, and really most features of new BlackBerry models except the screen. It’s better than its cousin, the 8520, because its on Verizon’s 3G EVDO network, rather than on T-Mobile’s slower EDGE.
